Useful Rug Info
We love educating people about rugs and this is where we answer all your pressing questions!

A common question we get asked in store is "What size rug do I need?" While the answer depends on your room's dimensions and personal style, here are some tips to help guide your decision.
Is Bigger or Smaller Better?
-
Small Rugs: A small rug may make a room feel smaller and make furniture look oversized.
If you opt for a smaller rug, make sure it complements the room's dimensions and the furniture. Balance is key!
-
Big Rugs: Larger rugs draw the eye outward, making a room appear bigger and bringing the room’s decor together.
If your room is small, avoid a rug that covers too much of the floor, we need to work with proportions so we don’t engulf the whole space.
Standard Rug Sizes
Here are the most common rug sizes:
- Small: 150x240cm
- Medium: 200x290cm or 240x300cm
- Large: 240x340cm or 270x360cm
-
Largest: 300x400cm
What Size Rug For My Living Room?
When selecting a rug for your living room, aim to leave about 30cm of natural floor (hardwood, tiles, etc.) between the edge of the rug and the walls.
If you have a TV unit, also leave a similar gap between the rug and the TV unit to maintain balance and ensure the rug doesn’t feel cramped.
If you have a standard couch, you'll want the rug to extend slightly beyond both sides, creating an overhang.
For a modular or L-shaped couch, measure the length of the couch, and this will generally be the length of your rug. The rug only needs to sit halfway under the chaise, with the rug extending from the front legs of the couch and across the seating area.
Here’s a simple guide depending on your furniture and room size:
-
Small (150x240cm): Use as a central feature. The rug doesn’t usually have any couch or chair legs on it, serving as a focal point in the room.
-
Medium (200 x 290cm or 240x300cm): Place the front legs of your couch or chairs on the edge of the rug, or even halfway on it. This creates a sense of space and makes the room appear larger.
-
Large (270x360cm) or Extra Large (300x400cm): The rug should sit under all your furniture, defining the space and creating a cohesive, grand look in large rooms.
What Size Rug for My Dining Room?
When choosing a rug for your dining room, aim for 60cm of clearance on all sides of your dining table to allow for the chairs.
This also allows the rug to frame the table properly while leaving enough natural floor (hardwood or tiles) visible around the edges for a balanced look.
Ideally, the rug should be large enough to keep all chairs comfortably on it, even when they’re pulled out.
Here’s a simple guide depending on your dining table size:
-
Small (150x240cm): Fits a 2-4 seater table. The chairs will partially fall off the rug when pulled out during entertaining.
-
Medium (240x300cm): Best for a 6-seater table. All chairs will sit comfortably on the rug, though head chairs may slightly hang off when entertaining.
-
Large (270x360cm) or Extra Large (300x400cm): Perfect for 8-10 seaters. This size keeps all chairs on the rug, though head chairs might fall off when entertaining with a 10-seater.
What Size Rug For My Bedroom?
When placing a rug in your bedroom, aim for a look where two-thirds of the rug sits underneath your bed, clearing the bedside tables.
This placement creates a clean aesthetic while allowing the rug to come from the foot of your bed.
Ideally, the rug should be the same width as your bed plus the bedside tables, ensuring there is enough overhang on all sides for your feet to land on when you get in and out of bed.
-
Small (150x240cm): Perfect for small rooms, placed at the foot of the bed. This size is also great for single beds or children's rooms, offering just enough coverage without overwhelming the space.
-
Medium (200x290cm or 240x300cm): Best for a queen-sized bed, with the rug partially placed under the bed. This size gives a balanced look while still leaving enough visible floor space.
-
Large (270x360cm): Fits under a king-sized bed, offering plenty of room around it. This larger size creates a luxurious feel with ample space for your feet to land on the rug.
-
Extra Large (300x400cm): Ideal for very open and expansive rooms, this size works well with large bedside tables or headboards, and it’s also suitable for super king-sized beds, offering a grand and welcoming feel to the room.
