Finding the right rug size can completely change how a room feels. So here are our rug size tips to find the best rug for your room.

Measure it out first.

Before choosing a rug size, use masking tape to mark the rug dimensions on your floor. It’s the easiest way to see how the rug will sit with your furniture and how much surrounding floor will remain visible.

Remember to open doors, pull out dining chairs and consider walkways when measuring your space.

Living Rooms

For most living rooms, we recommend choosing a rug large enough for at least the front of your sofa to sit on it. This helps anchor the seating area and connect your sofa, coffee table and occasional chairs.

Small Rugs

Best for compact living rooms or when you intentionally want a smaller rug centred beneath a substantial coffee table. If no furniture sits on the rug, we recommend using a rug underlay to help keep it securely in place.

240 x 300cm rug placement under a sofa in a living room

Our go-to rug size for most living rooms is a 240 x 300cm. However, you also have the option of a slightly skinnier medium fit with our limited range of 200 x 300cm rugs.

Position the rug so the front of your sofa sits on it, helping connect the seating area without overwhelming the room.

Large Rugs

Ideal for larger living rooms, longer sofas and sectionals. A large rug gives you more room to anchor your sofa, coffee table and occasional chairs within one defined seating area.

Extra Large Rugs

300 x 400cm rug placement under a sofa in a large living room

Best suited to very large, open living rooms where most or all of your furniture can sit comfortably on the rug. We recommend this placement in generous, airy spaces where an extra large rug won't overwhelm the room.

Dining Rooms

rug placement under a dining table - rectangle, oval, long

When choosing a rug for a dining room, allow the rug to extend approximately 60cm beyond every side of the dining table. This gives dining chairs enough room to remain on the rug.

rug placement under a round dining table

For round dining tables, we recommend a square rug to comfortably accommodate the table and surrounding chairs. While we don't stock square rugs as a standard size, we can arrange for a rug to be cut and bound square for you. Contact us to enquire.

Bedrooms

rug placement under two-thirds of a bed in a bedroom

For bedrooms, we recommend positioning approximately two-thirds of the bed on the rug, with the bedside tables remaining off it.

The rug should extend beyond both sides and the foot of the bed, giving you plenty of rug underfoot when getting in and out of bed.

Keeping bedside tables off the rug also helps the room feel less carpeted and reduces furniture indentations, giving you greater flexibility to move or reposition your rug in the future.

For kids' rooms and single beds, we recommend a small rug, typically 150 × 240cm or 160 × 230cm. Position it beneath the lower portion of the bed, alongside the bed or across the foot of it, depending on the room layout.
