WHAT SIZE RUG DO I NEED?
One of the most frequently asked questions we get in store is what size rug do I need? While the final decision does come down to the dimensions of your room and, of course, your personal taste, below are some tips on picking the right rug for you.
IS BIGGER OR SMALLER BETTER?
Generally, a smaller rug may make a room look smaller and make the surrounding furniture look disproportionately large. So when opting for a smaller rug, keep in mind the dimensions of your room and the visual weight of your furniture - the aim is to complement the overall look of your room and create balance.
The general effect of a bigger rug is that when you enter a room, the eye is drawn out to the edges of the rug. So when you have a bigger rug, it automatically draws the eye out further creating a sense that your room is larger. This is in addition to the big rug bringing all elements of your decor together and harmonising your room.
With that said, if you have a small sized room, you may not want to have a “wall to wall” area or decorative rug.
WHAT IS THE STANDARD RUG SIZE?
While our rugs are handmade and may vary slightly in size, generally there are 4 standard rug sizes:
Medium: 200x290cm or 240x300cm
Large: 240x340cm or 270x360cm
WHAT SIZE RUG DO I NEED IN MY LIVING ROOM?
Using the bigger vs smaller general rules, below are some examples of how you can use the various rug sizes in your living room to create the right look for you (within your room dimensions).
Rug in the centre of your furniture, no couch or chair legs on rug
A small rug in a living room is usually used as a central focus point of the room and completes any bare flooring space. The style of small rug selected may be used to balance the features of your coffee table.
You may place the rug up to the edge of your furniture or decide to border your rug with your beautiful flooring.
Couch partially on edges of the rug
This is the standard rug size for a living room and it is the most popular layout for living room decor that we see. You can place the front legs of your couch or chairs on the edge of the rug or you may choose to put up to half your couch or chairs on the rug. This will draw the eye out to under your couch and create a bigger looking room as well as creating some sense of proportion to your whole room.
Large or Extra Large (270x360cm or 300x400cm)
All furniture on the rug
Theoretically, this is the “ideal” rug size for a very large room. It provides functionality (no tripping hazards) and truly defines the space within a room. The furniture can sit fully on the rug up to the rug’s edge or you may choose to leave a small border of the rug surrounding the furniture. Either way, this size rug provides a sense of grandeur and completeness in a large or open room.
WHAT SIZE RUG DO I NEED IN MY DINING ROOM?
This decision very much depends on the size of your dining setting. Below is a guide on what size rug you would need to accommodate your dining setting.
2 to 4 seater small dining setting, chairs partially off rug when entertaining
A smaller rectangular rug may truly complete a small eating area whether the dining table is round or angular. A small sized rug can fit a 2 to 4 seater small dining table and the chairs should comfortably fit on the rug when tucked in. However, when entertaining the chairs will fall off the rug and sit partially on and partially off the rug.
6 seater dining setting, chairs comfortably on rug
This is the most popular sized rug for a 6 seater dining setting. All chairs will comfortably sit on the rug. However, where the dining setting has 2 head chairs, the chairs may sit partially off the rug only when entertaining (this is normal).
Large or Extra Large (270x360cm or 300x400cm)
8 to 10 seater dining setting, chairs comfortably on rug
For larger dining settings, we recommend the large or largest rug size. A 270x360cm rug can comfortably sit an 8 seater dining setting with all chairs on the rug. It can also fit a 10 seater dining setting but any head chairs may partially be off the rug only when entertaining (this is normal).
Should you have the space within your room and would like all 10 chairs to completely sit on the rug when entertaining, we recommend a 300x400cm rug.
